Allergy sufferers can breathe easier (some Aussie innocation)
ALLERGY sufferers can breathe easier thanks to a Government education program aimed at NSW food businesses. The announcement coincides with World Allergy Day and was born from a pilot program at Canada Bay Council, in Sydney's inner-west.The program includes a half-day workshop for food businesses, educating them about handling, preparing and labelling food for customers with specific dietary requirements due to allergies. Businesses which complete the program will be able to display an Allergy Aware logo.
"Over 160,000 people in NSW alone suffer food allergies and their ability to dine out is severely restricted because of uncertainty about the foods they are served," NSW Primary Industries Minister Ian Macdonald said. "Statistics reveal most fatal food allergy reactions occur outside the home, so this program could help save lives."
The pilot training program, launched on World Allergy Day, is a joint initiative between the NSW Food Authority and Food Regulation Partnership and in the Sydney metropolitan area the City of Canada Bay Council.
